THE GREAT WALL
The great wall of china
Construction of the Great Wall began in efforts to keep out barbarian nomads during the rule of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Today, this magnificent construction is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country. The Great Wall actually consists of many different walls and fortifications, some of which run parallel to each other. Sections of the wall run through the following cities and provinces:
The most well-known and the best-preserved portion of the wall was built during the Ming dynasty, from the 14th to the 17th century. Although the wall's main purpose was to keep intruders out of China, it ended up being more of a "psychological barrier" between China and the rest of the world. The Great Wall is, and will continue to be, a "powerful symbol of the country's enduring strength" (History.com). |
